Fix garbled ZIP filenames online

Why Japanese ZIP filenames become unreadable

Older Windows programs sometimes stored Japanese names in CP932, the Windows variant of Shift-JIS, without a reliable encoding label. A tool that reads those bytes as UTF-8 may display broken names. Start with the original ZIP so you can compare its filename bytes before you save anything.

Choose a source

Open a ZIP
Compare the names in an archive. Choose a reading for the whole archive or for individual entries, then extract selected files or create a new ZIP with UTF-8 names.
Paste names
Paste garbled names, one per line, to compare possible readings and copy a readable result.
Use filenames
Select already extracted files to examine the names on your device. Choose up to 32 files at once. The tool uses their names to suggest corrections without reading the contents.

What can be recovered?

Compare CP932 and UTF-8 and select a name you recognize. A readable name is a candidate, not a guarantee. If a filename was already saved with missing characters, ask the sender for the original ZIP. The tool does not repair document contents or read EUC-JP or ISO-2022-JP names.

Browser limits and privacy

In ZIP mode, inputs may be up to 16 MiB each and 32 MiB in total. An archive can contain up to 512 entries, with a folder depth of 16, an expansion ratio up to 200×, and a processing limit of 60 seconds. Processing stops if a limit is exceeded.

Filenames, archive contents and pasted text stay in your browser. The bytes sent counter refers to your file data. Password-protected archives and split archives require a desktop extractor.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool upload filenames or files?

No. Original names, pasted text and file contents are processed locally in your browser.

Can it fix garbled text inside a document?

No. This tool changes how ZIP filenames are read. It does not change text or other data inside your files.

Can I save a ZIP with the corrected filenames?

Yes. Select the entries you want to keep, then create a new ZIP with their names in UTF-8. The original ZIP stays intact.

What if neither reading looks right?

Leave the entry unselected and check with the sender for the original filename or archive. The tool supports CP932 and UTF-8 and cannot reconstruct bytes the archive no longer contains.

What does the name list contain?

Export the selected entries to save their original and chosen names side by side in a text file. You do not need to extract the archive.
